Tree spading is a common method for moving and transplanting large
trees from one site to another. The following are some reasons for
transplanting large trees:

■To prevent the loss of a tree due to construction
■To create space for a new building addition
■A mature tree has outgrown its present location
■To alter the design of a landscape
■To move a tree to a site better suited to its needs
■To create a mature landscape quickly

Spading also saves labor, planting time and years of maintenance of the
juvenile tree. Why wait 15-20 years for a small tree to mature? We have
done the waiting for you! Spading also eliminates the possible risk of
mower damage that commonly occurs on younger, smaller trees.
Landscape professionals use a tree spade to create an “instant landscape”
by digging and transplanting large trees from one location to another.

A larger root ball is taken when transplanting a tree. For example, a 2-½
inch caliper tree at a garden centre would normally weigh approximately
350 lbs. Planting the same tree with a truck mounted tree spade
increases the weight to more than 1200 lbs. As a result, more roots stay
with the transplanted tree.
